How much does Sylvan cost? "How much does Sylvan cost" has one honest answer: it depends on the centre, and the centres publish it. Sylvan Learning's national pricing page says tutoring is "typically $50 and up per session" and sends you to your local centre, and most centres now carry a pricing page with a membership table. We read 13 of those pages on 24 October 2026, from Texas to San Francisco, and this page sets out what they say: the per-session rates by plan, the registration fee, what a month and a school year add up to, the guarantee's conditions, and a printable worksheet to price your own centre's offer. What Sylvan publishes nationally

The national pricing page (sylvanlearning.com/pricing) says pricing "varies at each independently owned and operated location" and gives four figures: the Sylvan Insight assessment is free (one subject); Personalized Tutoring and Homework Help "$50 and up per session"; ACT and SAT group classes "$900 and up per class"; STEM and academic camps "$200 and up per camp". It names three ways to pay, Pay As You Go Monthly, Pay Over Time and Prepayment Discount ("our lowest tuition rates"), without amounts, and links to the Sylvan Guarantee. No hourly rate, session length or student-teacher ratio appears on the consumer site; Sylvan's own job advertisements and its filings with state education departments describe a 3-to-1 student-teacher ratio, and secondary sources describe sessions of about an hour.

How the centre pricing pages work

Every centre pricing page uses the same table: three plans in rows, Month-to-Month (the base rate, "cancel anytime"), 6-Month Minimum (save 5 percent) and 12-Month Minimum (save 10 percent, "best value"), with columns for 2, 3 and 4 sessions a week; the 3- and 4-a-week columns get a further discount on the longer plans, so the headline "memberships from $xx a session" on each page is the 12-month, four-a-week cell. A single session with no membership is priced separately, and a one-time registration fee applies to every plan. The Aventura, Florida page shows the arithmetic: a twice-a-week month-to-month plan at $55 a session is $440 a month, so Sylvan bills 8 sessions a month for twice a week (12 for three times, 16 for four).

Search listings for ten more centres (Torrance, Irvine, Philadelphia, Mineola, Bellevue, Maple Valley, Puyallup, Stanwood, Southern Pines, Lone Tree) show the same pattern: 12-month four-a-week rates of $44 to $56 and single sessions of $55 to $72, with registration $99 to $199.

So: month-to-month $37 to $75 a session, median about $60; a 12-month plan at twice a week $34 to $68; single sessions $50 to $79; registration $79 to $199. Nothing on any centre page prices an SAT or ACT course, an hour, or a session length.

What a month and a year add up to

Add the registration fee once, and notice the guarantee's condition below: twice a week is under the 4 hours a week it requires.

The Sylvan Guarantee, in its own words

Sylvan's guarantee page promises that a child will "demonstrate mastery of at least 50 skills in 50 hours of instruction", with "free additional tutoring hours for students who don't see these promised results". The conditions: participating locations only; it "applies only to SylvanSync Math and Reading Programs for grades 3-12"; the student "must attend at least 4 hours per week and must complete 50 hours of instruction within 14 weeks". At the published rates, 50 hours in 14 weeks is about $2,000 to $3,750 of tuition in three and a half months. The 6- and 12-month plans publish no early-termination, hold or refund terms; "cancel anytime" is written only against month-to-month.

The company

Sylvan was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1979 by a former teacher, W. Berry Fowler; it was bought by Franchise Group in 2021 for about $81 million and sold in February 2024 to Unleashed Brands of Bedford, Texas, whose address is now in every Sylvan page footer. Unleashed described it at the purchase as "more than 500 franchised locations", mostly in the US and Canada; it opened 11 centres in 2025 and sits at number 98 on Entrepreneur's 2026 Franchise 500.

What to ask the centre, in writing

1. The per-session rate for the plan and frequency you will actually use, and the session length in minutes.
2. The registration fee, and whether it is waived in the current promotion.
3. The number of students per teacher in your child's session, and whether the same teacher is there each week.
4. For a 6- or 12-month plan: what happens if you stop early, move, or the child is ill for a month (hold, transfer, refund).
5. Whether your centre participates in the guarantee, and whether your plan meets its 4-hours-a-week condition.
6. How progress is reported, how often, and whether you get the session notes.

Sylvan against the alternatives, on price

The question that decides it is not the price but the ratio: a child who is behind needs one adult on their gap, and that is what a 3-to-1 session cannot promise and a 1-on-1 class can.
